Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Scottsdale, AZ

During your lifetime, your teeth naturally grow in many stages. Molars in the back of your mouth, also known as wisdom teeth, often start to emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. For some patients, wisdom teeth never emerge. For others, back molars grow in line with the surrounding teeth and don’t cause issues. Other patients experience ongoing concerns with pain and alignment as wisdom teeth grow and push through the gums.

As a rule of thumb, it’s harder to keep the teeth located in the back of our mouth clean. This is especially true if wisdom teeth are both above and partially under the gum line. Therefore, partially exposed wisdom teeth often lead to an increase in mouth infections. When wisdom teeth become infected, impacted, develop cysts, abscesses, or push existing teeth out of alignment, they may require surgical removal known as extraction.

Common Questions About Wisdom Teeth Removal

What happens during extraction surgery?

During a surgical extraction, one of our highly trained dentists makes a small incision into your gum while you are under general anesthesia. Your wisdom teeth and surrounding jaw area are then assessed, and the teeth removed.

Will removing my wisdom teeth hurt?

At Scottsdale Family Smiles our dentists and the entire staff will go out of their way to ensure your surgery is pain-free and you are comfortable at all times.

Since you will be under general anesthesia at the time of surgery, you will be asleep during the entire procedure and won’t feel anything. Experiencing some discomfort after surgery is normal. Our staff will discuss options with you to ease any discomfort during the recovery phase.

What is the recovery time after extraction surgery?

In most cases your recovery will only take a few days. During this time you should limit your activities and take time off from work to rest.

In some cases patients experience a prolonged recovery due to complications or infection.

Am I a candidate for extraction surgery?

At Scottsdale Family Smiles, we know each of our patients is unique and so are your teeth and overall oral health.

The best way to determine if your wisdom teeth should be removed is to call 480-607-6937 or schedule an appointment at our office. One of our dentists will assess your teeth, answer any questions you have, and provide the best treatment plan for you.
