Why You Need TMJ Treatment
The temporomandibular joint connects the mandible to the rest of the skull, acting as a hinge on either side of the jaw that controls the opening and closing of the mouth. However, if pain and discomfort arise in the temporomandibular joint, it can interfere with the natural way that the jaw hinges move.
For our patients suffering from temporomandibular joint disorders, it becomes uncomfortable to move the jaw, making it difficult to eat or even speak.
The root cause of the condition may stem from one of many sources, from genetic predisposition to a pre-existing injury or joint condition. In addition, symptoms can be exacerbated when patients clench their jaws or grind their teeth as a response to the pain they’re experiencing.

TMJ Symptoms Include:
● Pain or tenderness in the jaw
● Difficulty chewing
● Jaw locking
In preparation for the procedure, we will perform a comprehensive examination, gather information on your oral and overall health, perform X-rays and/or CT scans and create a computer simulation of the implants. This allows us to adjust the implants as necessary and design your new set of teeth based on your needs.
The actual procedure typically takes about 2.5 hours per arch. Dr. Fattah can install implants on your upper, lower or both arches at the same time. We will provide you with anesthesia, then place the implants directly into your jawbone to secure your new set of teeth in place.
Treatment for TMJ Disorders
Fortunately, treating temporomandibular joint disorders with Scottsdale Family Smiles can allow patients to self-manage pain levels without surgical intervention. Depending on the severity of the conditions, Dr. Fattah might demonstrate various relaxation techniques to loosen the jaw muscles, instruct patients on how to perform jaw joint massages, or suggest the use of warm to cold compresses and over the-counter pain medication.
In more serious cases where significant medical intervention is needed, patients at Scottsdale Family Smiles can expect one of a few treatment options to help manage TMJ disorders. Dr. Fattah carefully examines each patient and explains which options are available so that the best treatment plan possible can be decided upon.
Physical therapy are non-invasive treatment options to start with, but our patients might also consider dental splints or retainers to keep the jaw positioned correctly to avoid added tension.
