How Does Invisalign® Work?

Invisalign works similarly to traditional braces, though these alignment systems are removable and almost completely invisible.

To begin treatment, impressions are taken of the patient’s teeth so that a series of aligner trays can be molded to fit perfectly. Each tray is designed to move the teeth a certain amount before the next aligner tray is to be worn.

Invisalign straightens teeth faster than traditional braces, and the trays are usually switched out every couple of weeks. Over several months, the aligners will effectively move teeth into the correct position as comfortably as possible. Once the last alignment tray’s wear is finished, the patient’s teeth should be completely straight.

Benefits of Invisalign®

  • Invisalign trays are removable, making them easier to clean
  • They’re clear, which makes them almost completely invisible
  • Patients can remove trays to eat comfortably
  • Brushing and flossing remains simple and requires no extra tools
  • Teeth do not stain as easily as they do with metal braces
  • Invisalign aligners are easy to maintain

Caring for Aligners

Aligners are easy to clean and can usually just be rinsed daily with warm water. It’s also acceptable to brush them with a soft toothbrush.

What Are Attachments?

Attachments are generally used in more complicated cases to encourage specific teeth to move into place properly. They consist of enamel-colored composite “bumps” on the teeth that allow the aligners to grip them more securely.

A ridge, similar to an attachment is a small indent made in the tooth that serves the same purpose, allowing the aligner to maintain a better grip.

Regular Checkups

Patients undergoing tooth alignment will need to visit Scottsdale Family Smiles occasionally so that the dentist can ensure the system is working as it should.

Unlike with traditional braces, these visits are not very frequent because with the Invisalign system, there is nothing that needs to be adjusted. The trays are simply changed out on a schedule and the dentist checks regularly to monitor progress.

How Long Does Invisalign Take?

Usually, treatment with Invisalign takes approximately twelve months to complete, though individual factors may make that time somewhat longer or shorter.

Is Invisalign® Convenient?

Invisalign trays are far more convenient than traditional braces for several reasons. They’re clear, easy to maintain, and can be removed for eating. Additionally, invisible aligner trays are relatively comfortable to wear.
