What Is a Tooth Abscess?
A tooth abscess (often called an infected tooth) forms when pus collects inside the tooth or surrounding gum tissue due to bacterial infection. Left untreated, it causes severe pain and can lead to serious health complications. Severe infections may require full mouth reconstruction to restore oral health after addressing the abscess.
What Causes Tooth Infection?
Tooth infections typically start with bacterial invasion into the pulp, the innermost part of your tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. These infections can be caused by:
- Untreated Cavities: If left untreated, cavities provide an entry point for bacteria to infiltrate the tooth and spread infection.
- Gum Disease: Advanced gum disease can form pockets between the teeth and gum line, where bacteria thrive and can eventually create an abscess.
- Dental Trauma: Injuries to the tooth, even minor trauma such as fractures or chips, can expose the pulp to bacteria.
- Poor Dental Hygiene: Brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings are key to removing bacteria on your teeth and gums.
- Weakened Immune System: A compromised immune system can’t respond as well to bacterial infections, making teeth more susceptible to abscesses.
- Smoking: Smoking nearly doubles your chances of getting an abscess by dampening your immune system and increasing your risk of gum disease.
Tooth Infection Symptoms
Recognizing the symptoms of infection is essential to start treatment early and prevent unwanted complications. Signs and symptoms of tooth infection include:
- Severe Toothache: Persistent, throbbing pain that gets worse when you chew is a hallmark symptom of infection.
- Swelling: Infection can cause inflammation and swelling in the face or cheeks near the tooth.
- Sensitivity: An infected tooth will be more sensitive to hot or cold substances.
- Fever: In more serious cases, infection can cause systemic symptoms like fever, chills, or aches.
- Pimple on Gums: An abscess will feel like a pimple-like bump on your gums.
Tooth Infection Treatments
Early intervention is key to avoiding aggressive care. While we strive to prevent the need for antibiotics, NSAIDs, and root canals, these treatments are sometimes necessary and expertly provided when required.

Antibiotics:
We prescribe antibiotics to eliminate the bacterial infection causing the abscess.

Drainage:
In cases where pus has accumulated, drainage may be necessary to relieve pressure and facilitate healing.

Root Canal Therapy:
This procedure involves removing infected pulp, cleaning the root canal, and sealing the tooth to prevent subsequent infection.

Tooth Extraction:
A severe infection can cause extensive tooth damage, leaving extraction as the only viable treatment option.

Pain Management:
Over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication can help reduce inflammation and pain, making it easier to keep the infected area clean.
