Mercury Use Throughout History
Despite the modern understanding of mercury and its risks, it’s still commonly used in dental fillings. Fortunately, it’s becoming less popular as time passes.
Despite the fact that mercury is a naturally-occurring element, it is still poisonous to humans. Even though mercury has been classified as relatively safe, it may still affect the body in several ways.
When patients with mercury-containing fillings chew food, the friction generated by the movement induces heat. This causes the mercury in the filling to heat up, and mercury vapors are then passed into the mouth. These vapors may be absorbed into either the bloodstream or lungs.
Again, though the exposure is minimal, Scottsdale Family Smiles understands that our patients do not want to risk having potentially harmful material used in their dental treatments.
