Biological Dentistry
Holistic dentistry describes a new approach to dental healthcare that addresses the health of a patient’s mouth from a holistic, whole-body perspective. Rather than focusing only on the teeth, jaw, and gums, holistic care takes a closer look at how oral health impacts the entire body.
Holistic dental care at Scottsdale Family Smiles focuses not only on the issues that directly impact a patient’s oral health but also the physical, emotional, and spiritual quality of life that indirectly affects the condition of a person’s mouth. While the teeth, gums, jaw, and head are a holistic dentist’s area of expertise, Dr. Fattah also considers the balance of the entire body’s health during his evaluations. Our practice was born from the idea that all aspects of a person’s health exist in a closely interconnected relationship.
Traditional Dentist vs. Biological Dentist: Understanding the Difference
Biological dentists are qualified to perform standard dental treatments and procedures, such as cavity fillings and crown placements, but they go one step further to see beyond the traditional western approach to oral health. To a biological dentist, a cavity doesn’t just mean that the patient needs a filling. It means that the patient may have an underlying condition, either physical or emotional, that is contributing to tooth decay. We strive to find the root causes of oral health challenges to prevent future damage and help patients improve their overall health.
What does this look like?
- Understanding existing health concerns
- Understanding lifestyle habits
- Evaluating sleep quality and breathing
- Using biologically compatible materials
- Discuss systemic oral health relationship
- Partnering with other practitioners to promote optimal full body health
Biological dentists are more qualified in understanding the close connection between dental health and whole-body health. They receive additional, extensive training in key disciplines, including toxicology, nutrition, and holistic health, equipping them to provide fully integrative dental care. By using biocompatible materials and minimally invasive techniques, they ensure that every treatment supports the body’s natural healing processes and doesn’t put the patient at risk for adverse health effects. This advanced training allows biological dentists to look beyond immediate symptoms, focusing on preventive care, evidence-based healthy habits, and long-term wellness. Our goal for your treatment is to help you achieve optimal health. We work with naturopathic physicians, ENTs, functional nutritionists, myofunctional therapists, sleep physicians, and chiropractors so you can live a happier and healthier life.
Bristle Saliva Test
Nutrition is a key component of dental health. However, it can be difficult to know if a patient is truly meeting their nutritional needs. The Scottsdale Family Smiles team offers the Bristle Saliva Test as part of our biological dentistry platform, analyzing the composition of each individual’s oral microbiome. This simple saliva test measures hundreds of bacteria, fungi, and viruses to help our team understand if a patient has a nutritional deficiency. We use these results to tailor our treatment plans, addressing any imbalances to promote a healthier oral environment.
Holistic Dentist / Biological Dentist Treatments
Dr. Fattah performs many of the same treatments as professionals working in a traditional setting; however, his holistic focus involves more layers than what patients typically expect when seeking care elsewhere. Scottsdale Family Smiles provides cleanings, fillings, and corrections. In addition to standard care, Dr. Fattah may also evaluate a patient’s airway, explain the mouth-to-body connection to patients, and practice a systemic approach to human health.
On top of this, our holistic dental practice utilizes safer materials than what is commonly used in dentistry. For example, our fillings are metal and BPA-free and we measure the case-by-case efficacy. Additionally, the Scottsdale team aims to handle dental surgeries in a minimally invasive way whenever possible, only resorting to surgery when simpler treatments are not an option. Our ultimate goal is to focus on our patients’ whole-body well-being.
As often as possible, our staff strives to offer natural remedies and whole-body treatments.
At Scottsdale Family Smiles, we incorporate advanced cleaning and preventative treatments such as ozone therapy and hydroxyapatite varnish into our biological dentistry practice. Ozone therapy uses ozone gas to kill bacteria and promote healing — without disruptive or potentially harmful chemicals — to provide an effective treatment for infections and inflammations in the mouth, reducing the need for antibiotics. For holistic prevention, our team uses hydroxyapatite varnish, a fluoride-free treatment, to strengthen tooth enamel and protect against decay. This treatment provides a protective barrier while supporting the remineralization process to help build a healthier and stronger smile.
